HAVERING MAYESBROOK'S National Junior League squad confirmed a place in the Southern Promotion final in Hendon, with a battling third-place display at Cambridge.

The result means the side take a superb second place in the Thames Division, behind Basildon Beagles, and book a final date in four weeks time.

Despite a solid all-round performance, Isaac Ogunlade provided the only A string win with a victory in the 400metres hurdles.

Ogunlade had earlier pushed Cambridge's national champion Ben Kelk all the way in the 110m hurdles, where only wind prevented him claiming a club record.

Massi Dendani's fine finish brought him 800m B victory, while he also anchored the 4x400m team to an excellent finish to the day after good legs by Ian Price, Ogunlade and McCarthy.

There were good points in the 3,000m as Hoseah Gikungu's league debut brought him a personal best and runner-up points.

Alfie Burr made a good league debut with third in the steeplechase and Andrew Kerr filled in for valuable second-place points in the B.

Kerr had scored well in his specialities, equalling his vault best for third and successfully tackling the heavier hammer for the first time to win the B event.

For the ladies, Kike Oniwinde bagged a pair of second places in javelin and shot and Gemma Phillips was runner-up in the 3,000m.

Becky Stanley made an impressive league debut with an 800m best in third, while Patsy McWeeney was second in the 1,500m B.

Ellie Watson was victorious in the triple jump B, before Nicola Peachey finished third in the 400m hurdles.

All-rounder Deborah Knight was third in the javelin B, before improving her bests in both sprints, and elder sister Katherine was third in the discus and shot B events.

Rachel Kerr completed the line up with points in 200m, 400m and discus before running both her specialist relays.

THE MEN'S British League squad travel to Winchester for their third round tie this weekend, hoping to consolidate their fourth place position.

Meanwhile, the Men's Southern League team are in Division Three action at Hemel Hempstead on Sunday.

HAVERING'S fourth-placed UK Women's League squad face their third and final fixture at Coventry on Sunday, needing a strong result to retain their Division Two status.

A DEPLETED young athletes squad face strong opposition in the Southern Area final at Hendon on Sunday, but a National final place looks unrealistic with the side being affected by holiday absentees.
